Environment on plastic waste and ocean pollution – What would be a cause which you feel most strongly about? How would you create awareness using only digital platforms? What would be your intended results?

May 14, 2019 published by Keerthana

In a world filled with remarkably a broad range of causes to spread awareness online, one of which most infinitely important factors to be spoken about strongly would be our environment. Mother Nature is extremely beautiful. But are we humans doing our part to safeguard and preserve it for our future generations to come?

The extensive and majestic ocean is home to some of the world’s most amazing animals. However, due to pollution many undersea creatures are decreasing in population. Loggerhead Sea Turtles are some of the oldest species on earth, popular in the Mediterranean regions and are endangered due to ocean pollution. Back in 2015, there was a sea turtle caught with 12cm plastic straw lodged in his nostril. Thankfully it was removed. The video in the link below this article shows why plastic waste is detrimental to marine life.

The use of digital media such as social media, viral videos, and blogs have all become tools for online activism. It has enabled activists to reach audiences faster, and build awareness efficiently. One of such example was set to the viewers by a well-known celebrity, Jason Momoa. He’s an advocate creating an alternative to change the system of single-use of plastic by using recyclable aluminium instead. (The link is below this article – Mananalu).

Live Lokai is another advocate in believing to find a balance on earth. They make bracelets from plastics cleared from the polluted oceans. (Link below).

How can we humans do our part by making a change to our home? My intended results of this blog is to spread awareness and share the different advocates who are changing the system around the world. It is also for you to make a difference after reading this blog.

May 10, 2019 published by Keerthana

What is Cyber bullying? It is using digital technology such as mobile phones or computers to threaten or mistreat a person. Some examples of Cyber bullying would be harassing a victim by sending unpleasant messages, posting embarrassing pictures or sharing personal information of the victim without their consent and spreading false accusations about the victim on the internet. Such incidents occur commonly among teenagers.

Some of the ways that Cyber bullying manifest are through social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, SMS messages and emails. What are the concerns victims should be worried about? If the bully is persistently using digital devices to harass continuously throughout the day and if the post is not removed or reported it could be on the internet permanently which could cause a bad online reputation. This could affect both the bully and the victim in their later stages of life. During times when they are applying for further education, employment and other areas in the life. All of these can bring down the self-esteem and cause depression resulting in weight loss, self-harm and a change in personality.

How can you react if you were a target of Cyber bullying or you know of someone who is being bullied online? Look for help hotlines that are available for immediate assistance, report all abusive content that are online by clicking on the “report abuse” button, take screenshot pictures to keep is as evidence and send a report to the police.

Many individual victims are suffering in silence every day of their lives wanting to seek for help but are reluctant. This usually happens because they think that it is a sign of weakness. Let’s do our part by helping a victim when you come across someone like that. Even the smallest action could make a significant difference.

Describe your attachment to Technology and Social Media. Would you be able to go back to a time without technology?

May 08, 2019 published by Keerthana

In today’s world, people are very attached to technology and social media. Writing a blog using a platform like this to spread some awareness, is also a form of attachment.

Some of us are fortunate to be in a time with technology. While others, maybe not so much. Think about it, those who live in a third world country with minimal technological facilities, the chances of them having an attachment towards technology or social media is highly impossible as they have no access and are behind time with the modern world. Well, they are the minority.

Majority of us today, we are dependent on technology. Social media networking has become a significant contributing factor to many businesses and people. Companies use it as a source of communication to collaborate on projects, promote brands, advertise online and many other reasons as it has an extensive value. But let’s all be honest, most of us use it for entertainment like games, VR experiences, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, etc.)

Technology and social media has negative and positive aspects to it. For an example, blogging has become self-centered and it is being misused. Overtime some of us have become addicted. Some can’t live without our devices such as mobile phones, tablets and computers. But there are also benefits and it has become an essential part in many people’s lives (e.g. Google). It has increased productivity for many users as it’s convenient.

Now, would you be able to go back to a time without technology? As for me, I wouldn’t mind having a glimpse of that experience but on a daily basis maybe not. How are you as an individual going to use technology in the most productive way possible and make a positive difference?
