What is Cyber bullying? It is using digital technology such as mobile phones or computers to threaten or mistreat a person. Some examples of Cyber bullying would be harassing a victim by sending unpleasant messages, posting embarrassing pictures or sharing personal information of the victim without their consent and spreading false accusations about the victim on the internet. Such incidents occur commonly among teenagers.
Some of the ways that Cyber bullying manifest are through social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, SMS messages and emails. What are the concerns victims should be worried about? If the bully is persistently using digital devices to harass continuously throughout the day and if the post is not removed or reported it could be on the internet permanently which could cause a bad online reputation. This could affect both the bully and the victim in their later stages of life. During times when they are applying for further education, employment and other areas in the life. All of these can bring down the self-esteem and cause depression resulting in weight loss, self-harm and a change in personality.
How can you react if you were a target of Cyber bullying or you know of someone who is being bullied online? Look for help hotlines that are available for immediate assistance, report all abusive content that are online by clicking on the “report abuse” button, take screenshot pictures to keep is as evidence and send a report to the police.
Many individual victims are suffering in silence every day of their lives wanting to seek for help but are reluctant. This usually happens because they think that it is a sign of weakness. Let’s do our part by helping a victim when you come across someone like that. Even the smallest action could make a significant difference.
